Our History

Where we've been?

Dyer United Methodist Church began as a dream to bring a Methodist Church into the Dyer area. A committed group of Christians met in the living room of Bryon and Dorothy Bamber’s home to fulfill that dream. The first official service was held at the Dyer Fire Department in June, 1948. Land was acquired and the original building was completed in 1951. A second building which housed a large sanctuary, classrooms was added during the 1960s and the last major renovation was completed in 1998. Although we are still the only United Methodist Church in Dyer, Schererville and St. John, bricks and mortar do not really tell our story. It’s all about the PEOPLE!

Where we are?

Serving the people of the tri-town area has always been the focus of this church. We have been used as a polling place, additional classroom space when public schools were overcrowded and a place to gather in good times and bad. For many years food pantry and angel tree programs have provided a helping hand to those in need. Operation Backpack provides school supplies to those unable to purchase them. Our Hopkins Park, IL mission team, in conjunction with another area church has been working to improve the quality of life in a community that struggles. An active children’s ministry and youth group welcome children and teens from the community to participate. If there is a need we try with God’s guidance, to find a solution.
